About Schedule K-3
Several MLPs now also issue Schedule K-3 (Partner's Share of Income from International Transactions). K-3s are typically available later — often May or June. If your K-1 has Box 16 checked, a K-3 is coming.
For most domestic individual investors, the K-3 information is either already reported on your K-1 or doesn't apply to you. If your MLP is a U.S. midstream company and the K-3 amounts are zero or immaterial, you can generally disregard it. Consult your tax software or advisor if you're unsure.
What to Do Once Your K-1 Arrives
Your broker's cost basis is almost certainly wrong for your MLP position. Brokers never see your K-1, so they never adjust for distributions, income allocations, or liability changes — and the gap compounds every year.
Track your real cost basis — free
Enter 4 numbers from your K-1. The calculator implements the full IRS Partner's Basis Worksheet and shows the gap between your broker's number and reality.
In the K-1 tracker, typing your numbers in uploads nothing; an uploaded K-1 PDF is read by a third-party AI provider. Privacy

What If Your K-1 Is Late?
K-1s can arrive as late as mid-March or later — that's normal. If your K-1 hasn't arrived by early April, file Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension, pushing your deadline to October 15. You don't need a reason.
Check online before waiting for the mail. Visit the Tax Package Support URL for your MLP (see the table above). The online version is usually available before mailed copies arrive. You'll need to register with your SSN and the MLP's EIN.
Key Insight
Important: An extension to file is not an extension to pay. If you expect to owe federal income tax, estimate the amount and submit payment by April 15 to avoid interest charges.
For the full walkthrough — including estimated tax payment calculations and safe harbor rules — see the filing extension guide for late K-1s.
What's in Your K-1 Tax Package
When your K-1 package arrives — whether downloaded online or received by mail — it contains several documents. Here's what to expect and what each piece is for:
Schedule K-1 (Form 1065)
The main document. Shows your share of partnership income (Box 1), interest (Box 4a), dividends (Box 4b/6a), capital gains (Box 8/9a/9b/9c), deductions (Box 12/13), distributions (Box 19), and other information (Box 20). Also includes your beginning and ending capital account (Section L) and your share of liabilities (Item K). These are the numbers that adjust your cost basis.
Supplemental Information
State-by-state income allocations, Section 199A (QBI) detail, §751 recapture data, and any entity-specific breakdowns. For Energy Transfer, this includes the separate schedules for ET, USAC, and SUN. For all MLPs, the state allocations tell you which state returns you may need to file.
Statement of Sale (if applicable)
If you sold units during the tax year, the partnership calculates your adjusted basis, §751 ordinary income, and capital gain/loss on the Sales Schedule. This is the number you use on Form 8949 — not the basis your broker reports on the 1099-B.
Release Patterns
The IRS requires partnerships to furnish K-1s to partners by March 15 (the 15th day of the third month after the partnership's year end). Most large MLPs meet or come close to that deadline. Last season, in the order the packages were released:
- USA Compression Partners (USAC): released February 20, 2026.
- Enterprise Products Partners (EPD): released March 3, 2026.
- Natural Resource Partners (NRP): released March 5, 2026.
- Cheniere Energy Partners (CQP): released March 6, 2026.
- Delek Logistics Partners (DKL): released March 6, 2026.
- Western Midstream Partners (WES): released March 11, 2026.
- Energy Transfer LP (ET): released March 13, 2026.
- MPLX LP (MPLX): released March 17, 2026.
Merger-affected K-1s sometimes arrive later than usual, with supplemental documentation. If you own multiple MLPs, the last K-1 to arrive determines when you can file; most experienced MLP investors file extensions by default.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) K-1 packages were most recently released March 3, 2026 at taxpackagesupport.com/enterprise, phone (800) 599-9985 (tax year 2025). Phone: (800) 599-9985. EPD is a single-entity K-1, simpler than Energy Transfer's three-partnership package. The current season's status is in the table above.
Energy Transfer (ET) K-1 packages were most recently released March 13, 2026 at taxpackagesupport.com/et, phone 800-617-7736 (tax year 2025); mailed packages follow in the days after and K-3s come later, typically by the end of June. The current season's status is in the table above.
Most major MLPs distribute K-1s through Tax Package Support, each on its own page (for example taxpackagesupport.com/enterprise for EPD and taxpackagesupport.com/et for Energy Transfer); CrossAmerica uses Partner DataLink. Register with your SSN and the units you held at year end. The online copy is usually posted before the mailed copy arrives.
File Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension, pushing your deadline to October 15. The extension is automatic; you do not need a reason. Most CPAs who handle MLP clients file extensions by default, because the last K-1 to arrive sets the date you can file.
Your broker tracks your original purchase price but never sees your K-1. Each year, K-1 items (distributions, income allocations, liability changes and deductions) adjust your cost basis, and the broker makes none of those adjustments. The K-1 Basis Tracker computes the IRS-adjusted figure from your K-1 history.
Possibly. MLPs operate in multiple states, and your K-1 includes state-by-state income allocations. Most small unitholders file in their home state plus zero to three additional states where allocations exceed the filing threshold; the year you sell can widen that list.
